The program is designed to equip students with comprehensive knowledge in Croatian philology, covering Croatian literature from its earliest stages to the modern era within a broader European context. It also encompasses an in-depth understanding of Croatian grammar and its historical evolution. In addition to these core subjects, students delve into contemporary linguistic theories, sociolinguistics, textology, lexicology, stylistics, and phraseology. A significant emphasis is placed on honing both spoken and written proficiency in Croatian. Culminating in a thesis focused on a chosen subfield of Croatian philology, the MA program is divided into a fundamental common component (60 credits) and an optional specialization (22 credits).
This program is ideally suited for applicants with a keen interest in Croatian language and literature, who aspire to work in areas that necessitate proficiency in Croatian or are closely linked to Croatian culture. It’s important to note that the MA program does not confer teaching qualifications.
Graduates of this program are well-prepared to embark on careers as Croatian philology specialists in economic, cultural, political, or social domains. The comprehensive training provides ample opportunities for young professionals with exceptional command of Croatian, coupled with a profound understanding of Croatian culture, as well as a grasp of the historical, economic, and social dynamics in contemporary Croatia.
One of the program’s strengths lies in its flexibility, catering to students with diverse interests. Furthermore, the department’s faculty members are actively engaged in scholarly pursuits, evidenced by their regular participation in both national and international conferences, as well as their contributions to numerous books and other publications in the field of Slavonic Studies. This reflects the program’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
