Central European Studies is an interdisciplinary master’s program at Eötvös Loránd University, drawing on the expertise of five institutes within the Faculty of Humanities.

The program’s objective is to cultivate well-rounded area experts with an extensive understanding of the Central European region. Courses encompass a wide array of subjects, including the history, cultures, languages, literary traditions, and societies of the region. Additionally, the curriculum delves into political systems, geopolitical factors, economies, international relations, minorities, urban architecture, and more. While there’s a focus on the shared heritage of Central Europe, students also have the opportunity to delve deeply into the individual histories and characteristics of specific countries.

One of the distinctive features of Central European Studies is the option to learn regional languages such as Polish, Czech, Slovak, Serbian, Croatian, Slovene, Romanian, or Ukrainian. Leveraging ELTE’s rich linguistic offerings and the expertise of philology departments, the program also includes instruction in English academic writing.

This program is well-suited for individuals seeking a comprehensive and versatile understanding of the Central European region, coupled with proficiency in complex language skills. It is ideal for those eager to apply their cultural proficiency and factual knowledge in practice.

Graduates of this program will possess a nuanced comprehension of Central Europe as a cultural region. They will be adept at recognizing the cultural, artistic, linguistic, historical, political, economic, and societal forces that have shaped the region over time. This knowledge serves as a solid foundation for future careers, enabling graduates to effectively collaborate with various cultural communities associated with Central Europe and fostering an appreciation for the multinational and multilingual culture of the region.

The program hones analytical and communication skills, and encourages abstract thinking and diverse methodological approaches to problem-solving. Graduates are inspired to continue their education and language development, establishing strong professional identities, and committing to ongoing self-improvement throughout their careers.
